Urbanism – Istanbul

Writing about Istanbul. How strange.

You feel as if riding a motorcycle after Valentino Rossi had; shooting a free kick after Cristiano Ronaldo; Playing “old McDonald had a farm” on piano while the crowd is still worshipping Anton Rubinstein who has just performed Nocturne no. 2 by Chopin.

Thousands of books, songs, movies, much love, hate, war, peace, art passed from this city and its metamorphic shape. Describing one single aspect of its essence means totally ignoring many others, as its very essence is something you don’t catch up very easily, something that slips from your hands just when you think you got it. Enormous, infinite, more that 12 million people live here. Istanbul is the result of the melting of many cities that developed along the years in a economically and military strategic area, the Bosporus, a key-link between water “Mediterranean and Black sea- and earth” Europe and Asia-. The rush and the traffic jam is something you have to get used to right away, if you want to live in this city, as well as the warm and passionate temper of its inhabitants. Streets and buildings seem very clean though, and public transportation is well organized as well, providing modern high speed trams and metros able to shorten the commuting time, in a city that has its borders in two different continents. Again, two highways run inside the city, and two huge bridges connect the two parts very efficiently. Modern architecture embracing traditional; driving on these bridges you will be able see on the late afternoon horizon the shape of the mosques, while the golden horn shines of its unique light. Bargains, bazaars, the taste of a different culture in a European dish, Istanbul is the perfect example of how enlargement for Europe could also be enrichment, assimilating the values and the lifestyle of a country that has the right to be called European but that if our eyes are open, we still have to discover.
